The test site of this study covers an area of 2x3 km located about 25 km southwest of Munich, Germany. The region is characterised by flat terrain except two cornfields on an older moraine formation in the north. South of the moraine there is a wetland mainly cultivated by pasture and meadow. The sedimentary plain in the south of the study area represents a typical rural landscape with small-scale agricultural land use pattern. The size of the fields included in this study varies between 0.6 and 15.3 ha. Main crop types were cereals (winter and summer barley, winter wheat, winter and summer rye and oat), corn, potatoes, rape, sugar peas and clover.
